Assessment of Enterprise-Level Business Systems

Business systems are methodical procedures or processes used as a delivery mechanism for providing specific goods or services to customers. Organizations need for these systems to become the core of the business in an effort to provide exceptional product handling, create strong customer relations, and strengthen the knowledge base of its employees. To create a proper assessment, one must know the current capabilities of its system, and have an idea of where the processes will be conducted. Conducting an assessment of the organization helps to obtain a picture of the systems current state, and allow plan altering that aid in alleviating problems of uncertainty, redundancy, waste, and inconsistency, which contribute to stagnant growth of the entire organization.

The first step in any project is to analyze the requirements of the goal one expects to accomplish. There are four major categories of requirements to seek: business requirements, stakeholder requirements, solution requirements, and transition requirements. Business requirements define the goals and objectives of the solution. Stakeholder requirements specify the needs of any individual or group supporting the project, while solution requirements will pinpoint information and specific qualities that the deliverables must enable, and transition requirements refer to the particular behaviors and actions associated with moving from current state to intended state. The question remains, how one will gather this critical information?

One method is to conduct a requirements workshop, wherein all stakeholders can convey their business needs, construct doable requirement statements that address what and not how, and help to conform these requirements into the boundaries of the project scope.
