Executive Summary

There are many types of sources to get information from. Sources take an important place in higher education. Harris’s (2007) concepts are suitable to evaluate sources. In the other words, it will be useful to use Harris’s (2007) concepts to find valuable academic sources. As a result of Harris’s (2007) concepts, it will be easier to accept or reject sources. In this report, two sources were accepted and four sources were rejected.

Introduction

Information exists in a variety of forms and can be found in different places, but not all information is academic and reliable. For this reason, it is important to evaluate sources in order to be familiar with this kind of process and to identify relevant information in academic research. The purpose of this report is, first of all, to learn about how evaluate academic sources and then how to apply it. The criteria of evaluation proposed by Harris (2007) was used to evaluate the sources for a hypothetical report on ‘Phone hacking and the media’. The main objective of this report is to comprehend the process of evaluating sources using CARS in order to acquire skills to determine which sources could be useful and which sources could not be used for academic research.

Methodology

According to Harris (2007), CARS may be defined as a system of criteria for evaluating academic sources. The criteria are as follows:

Credibility indicates a verification provided that the resources can be trusted and that to prove the authenticity and reliability of the information and that could be confirmed by an author profile and quality control information.

Accuracy means to make sure that information is actual, up to date and gives the whole truth.

Reasonableness indicates that information is presented by a writer without any personal purpose...
