Planning management is a vital aspect for successful businesses. The process includes creating goals, albeit monetary or task driven, and formulating a plan of action to reach those goals. Boeing is an international aerospace company that manufactures airplanes for commercial use and security systems for defense and space uses. Boeing is responsible for lives and the thoughtfulness that goes into planning new products must be precise. The quality of the product determines the overall health of the company. This essay will evaluate the planning function at Boeing, will analyze legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility that influence the planning process, and will analyze factors that affect strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency planning at the company.

According to the company’s website, the vision of Boeing is, “People working together as a global enterprise for aerospace leadership” (“About Us”, 1995-2012). Reaching attainable goals is one way for Boeing to achieve its vision. Year after year Boeing continues to improve and create new products to satisfy the needs of their consumers. From creating more environmentally friendly commercial airliners to spacecraft and lunar roving vehicles, technology and innovation are instrumental in propelling Boeing into the future.

The planning function at Boeing involves setting goals and creating guidelines on reaching the goals set forth. Boeing’s decision making process is based upon the effect it will have on the goals of the company. The guidelines set forth will act as a map for any new process. The goals will have timelines and must meet quality control standards. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates the airworthiness of any aircraft and places stringent standards on all aircrafts. Because of the safety standards that Boeing must adhere to, detailed planning is essential.
