In this novel, the chapter Transplanted in Alien Soil talks about how George Starling gets a glimpse of the Harlem Renissance when he moves to Harlem in 1945. When George moves to Harlem it was "a mature and well established capital of black cultural life.." This was just the beginning of the Harlem Renissance. Harlem was begging to bloom. "Virtually ever black luminary was living within blocks of the others in the elevator buildings..". Historical Harlem Renissance blacks were in Harlem creating black artwork. These historical figures include Langston Hughes, Thurgood Marshall, Paul Robeson, and many more. Because of the Great Migration Harlem was able to bloom with great black artist.

In this biography they summarize The Great Migration and the Harlem Renissance. It describes The Great Migration as "an era of increased education and employment opportunities for black Americans". It describes how racism created harsh conditions for blacks living in the North. It describes the Harlem Renissance as a cultural movement, in New York, where blacks met "to discuss the challenges facing the black community". Putting The Great Migration and Harlem Renissance together, we see that the Great Migration was the starting point of the Harlem Renissance. With the end of the civil war ushering in the Great Migration, it also brought the civil rights groups to New York establishing their headquarters.
