Group Topic: How HR uses Social Media

Social media has quickly become a way for people to stay in steady contact with the world. Beyond just using social media in a social way, businesses have begun to also use this technology for all that it is worth. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Monster are all common networking websites. From the Human Resource Management aspect, companies are able to reach a great deal of people very easily or people are able to reach out to companies much easier for recruiting and job candidate searches. Also, consumer feedback has become a popular use of the social media.

For this proposed HR team project, our group has narrowed down our options and will choose either Starbucks, Kraft, or Reebok as of the company we are going to research and focus the project around. We will dissect the ways in which the company uses the different social media sites for recruiting, selection, consumer feedback, and how the customer feedback and information is then used. Being such a new and fresh tool for many companies it will be interesting to see to what degree the company we choose uses the technology and whether they are doing it in a positive or negative way. Or if the company is maximizing the tool for all that it is worth. To ad, social media websites gives companies the ability to quickly judge a person in either a positive or negative way or maybe even in a false perspective. Is this helping or hurting the selection process? Are companies saving money and time because they are able to get better applicants for positions and cutting back on training due to better candidates.

By just brushing the surface of a few HRM practices there is already a great deal of interesting points and ways that a company can implement social media. We feel that Starbucks, Kraft, or Reebok are companies where we can appropriately apply, experiment with and evaluate their uses of social media.
