Tommy Boy – Callahan Auto

SWOT

When looking at the family owned auto parts plant in the movie Tommy Boy, a SWOT analysis can be created for this business just as they are for real life companies today. Strengths that are shown for Callahan’s auto parts are that it is a family owned business which is respected by its community and also by those who have worked with the company in the past. The banks as well as well as Callahan’s customers have a trust in the company name from doing strong business with them. Weaknesses also have to be looked at. Before Tommy’s father passed away there were loans being taken out to be able to create and sell new brake pads for vehicles. If there were no loans that the bank had to lend them, then Tommy Boy and the company would have never been put in the place to be able to be shut down by the bank and bought over by their main competitor when his father passed away. Opportunities for the Callaghan Company include their road ahead of them for their new high quality brake pads which will “revolutionize the industry”. This could open a large market for them being many car shoppers want the safest cars out on the market; this is something that the car manufacturers need to take into account. Another opportunity that Callaghan has is that the auto shops around Sandusky, Ohio have been closing down, leaving more room for them to come in and help those who are no longer being helped by these companies. When adding the safest brake pads to their cars this could open large doors for them as well. The main threat that Callaghan has is their competitors, one of them being Zalinsky. The brake pad with the guarantee on the box offers safety of the mind for those that purchase them. This is a threat to Callaghan due to they do not have this feature on their boxes.
