Abstract

Safety should be the primary concern to anyone who is involved with aviation today. A major factor that inhibits safety in aviation is human error. Human error consists of poor communication, leadership, and poor decision making. Regardless of what the reasoning is with any accident in aviation, human error is the main culprit to the accident. This issue needs to be addressed on a daily basis to ensure everyone understands that safety should be on the top of everyone's list. Crew Resource Management (CRM) has been and will be the primary tool to reduce human error and accidents in aviation while ensuring that safety is the forefront in the aviation industry.

Crew Resource Management

The roots of Crew Resource Management can be traced back to 1979 when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted a workshop called "Resource Management on the Flight Deck" (Crew Resource Management, 2009). Based upon results from extensive research from NASA, statistics displayed that human error was the primary cause of all aviation related accidents. The objective of this workshop was to introduce Crew Resource Management training for the aviation community which would encompass a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes including communications, situational awareness, problem solving, decision making, and team work (Crew Resource Management, 2009). Its concern was not so much the technical knowledge and or the ability to operate aircraft but to aid in the improvement of interpersonal skills to improve the management of flights in an organized aviation community. Interpersonal skills are all behaviors and feelings that humans have that reflect with the interactions with others (Counseling Center, 2004).
