Critical Race Analysis

Roger Clegg writes an article called “Voting Rights—and Responsibility”, which was published on “The New York Times” on December 1, 2011. In the article, Roger stated that the population is multifarious in the U.S, blacks are no longer the largest minority, and Asian and Hispanic population are growing faster than whites and blacks. In this situation, the U.S politics still treat these non-white people unfair, such as “hire people, admit students into universities on the basis of race, and gerrymander voting boundaries along racial lines to ensure a certain number of ‘majority-minority’ ”(Clegg, 2011). Since Roger believed that it is increasingly untenable for the U.S national policies to divide individuals into racial and ethnic categories and to treat people differently based on their races (Clegg, 2011). He considered that people should not have racial classification, preference, and discrimination, which include segregated voting districts because of racial gerrymandering; people should respecting one another regardless of race, ethnicity or sex; loving our country; and following the law (2011). Roger also claimed that voting right should be fair; children, noncitizen, mental disable or criminals cannot vote, but felons should have voting rights after serving.

I agree with Roger Clegg’s idea that the U.S politics should treat each person equally, regardless of races, ethics and genders, especially on voting rights, employment and educations. The content of “Voting Rights—and Responsibility” is related to the class materials. Since Roger discussed racial discriminations that the U.S politics treat people by their races, which lead to unfair in employment, educations and voting rights; and the class material introduced race and how the immigrants were differently treated under the U.S policy and laws.
