Kodak is fading away because of competition, even though during the competition, its technology has been boosted dramatically. First of all, thanks to Fuji, Sony and some other competitors’ contributions in this industry. Without their pressure, Kodak might be still dreaming that “if there was a competitor, Kodak would blow them away.” Meanwhile, people might be still using traditional camera and photofinishing technique. In addition, the biggest group of beneficiaries under rivalry of those industry tycoons is consumers. Due to competition, each company must slash their price to attract consumers so as to achieve more market shares, so consumers benefit. Secondly, in the fact, Kodak used to be the pioneer in this industry and led the way to succeed. However, what makes me confused is why Kodak’s monopoly position on sales and market shares would be replaced rapidly by other competitors, even though Kodak invents new technology and ideas. I thought it might be caused by defects of management. However, according to the article, Kodas’s strategies look like are on the right track, such as focusing on customer, extensive advertising, and mass production at low cost. So this is my question, how come does Kodak decay so rapidly although they innovate new things? After all, my recommendation is Kodak should give up some areas that create fewer profit margins, such as traditional cameras, instant cameras, while it should seek to broad its market share on some potential products. In addition, besides exploits new land, Kodak should enhance its internal management competency so as to find a better way to market their products.
