Guidelines for Analysing a Leadership-focused Case Study

1. 2. 3. When you analyses a situation always start with a framework. (Zemke and Kramlinger, 1982, Figuring Things Out) DON’T WAFFLE or “borrow the client’s watch to tell them the time.” The USB PLDJ uses the framework of ME-WE-WORK-WORLD, or Personal, Interpersonal, Organisational and Societal. The diagram below provides an overview of the range of leadership related topics that are covered throughout the PLDJ and which provide an integrative framework of leadership. As an MBA student it is your task to develop an integrative understanding of this entire framework so that you can apply it in real life. A case study is simply a simulated exploration of a real-life situation. It is never possible or productive to try and assess a case study or situation by using every element of a framework. View the case study as an “information gathering process.” It is simply taking the place of a series of interviews that you may have had with people inside a particular system. – What is the case study telling you? – Which of the elements of the Leadership Framework appear to be relevant for this case study. – Identify between 7 to maximum 12 items through which you will analyse a case study. Now analyse the case study through the lenses of the selected elements of leadership: – First, analyse it from a specific perspective of an element, e.g. VISA styles. Do this with each of the selected elements. – Second, reach concrete conclusions for each application of an element. – Third, where appropriate make a practical recommendation. – Finally, provide an integrated overview of the case study and your critical review, analysis and findings.
