Franz Kafka

To an ordinary person’s life Franz Kafka had an ordinary life. He was born on July 3, 1883 in Prague. His parents were Hermann and Julie Kafka. The two owned a small shop that sold fancy goods such as jewelry and umbrellas. Franz was the eldest of six children, including two brothers that died in infancy and three sisters that outlived him. His first brother Georg was born two years after he was. He died a year later. His second brother Heinrich was born in 1887. He died within a year. Though life had not been prosperous with the boys in the family, luck seemed to be on the girl’s side as they were born in somewhat of a sequence with Gabriele being born first on September 22, 1889, then Valerie on September 25 1890, and finally Ottilie on the 29th of October in 1892. They children of the Kafka family were raised in a governess type lifestyle which was common among the middle and upper classes at the time. The moved from place to place as their success grew with the store. Once they were financial stable in one apartment, they would soon move to another providing they had the funds to support the move. With every move the family overall seemed to get better.

Franz was a quiet child. He would often like to write plays and stories for his sister to put on in their spare time. He also loved to read, and spent most of his time doing it. Once old enough, Franz began school. He attended German schools instead of Czech by his father’s choice. German schools at the time had better buildings and better education. Mr. Kafka wanted to make sure that Franz was getting the best education possible for social advancement. Most people in Prague spoke the common language which was Czech, but by the age of ten Franz was able to speak both Czech and German due to how he was raised. Franz was an overall bright child.
