Virtual Website Redesign
University of Phoenix
Effective Site Navigation and Design Layout
Learning Team B chose www.msn.com as our example of a website with a good design, layout, colors, and fonts. From the home page, the colors are subdued enough to keep the attention of the user. The layout, even though a large quantity of information is presented, is spread throughout and organized in a very systematic way that is very intuitive to the user. A screen capture is represented in figure 1 of a recent day on www.msn.com with callouts showing particular interests of the site design and navigation in figure 2 and figure 3.

Figure 2 – Top section of www.msn.com website
In addition to the subdued colors of the website and the nice spacing of all the information, there are sections that pertain to local events, news and weather from the area of the country that you are in. As shown in figure 2, you are also allowed to customize your view of the MSN website and the top portion also has quick links to other main sections within the website – much the same as a newspaper would have their contents set up. As shown in figure 1 and figure 2, an additional aspect of the MSN website is the notification to the users where the advertisements are so that they do not click on them by mistake.
