Recognition memory is the process of recalling information that we have learned through reading and other forms of study. This is first on my list of ways to prepare for the upcoming exam, by reading the text thoroughly so that when I am questioned on the exam I will be able to recall that information and put it to use.

I know I want to store the information I am learning, but how am I going to do that, and insure that it doesn’t store in the STM (Short Term Memory) and then trickle out of my ear over dinner? Maintenance Rehearsal is the process of repeating information with the intention of keeping and storing that information; it can be practiced by reading aloud or mentally through repetition. Now for an entire text book this process may seem a bit too tedious, but with other memory practices in play I find that much if the information is there ready to be recalled.

Chunking (taking large portions of information and chunking them into smaller chunks to be learned) is a process I use when redeeming an iTunes code or other form of long text that has to be entered properly; usually these codes are roughly 12 digits in length so I enter them 4 digits at a time, just like when entering my credit card online to make a payment (although I unfortunately shop online too often, and have managed to memorize my credit card number). I tend to use the spacing effect often as well, especially when reading a chapter in our text; I usually try to read a chapter over the course of a couple of days and then repeat the process while using the maintenance rehearsal method.
