Race and My Community
Up until I started this ethnics’ class, I never gave the community I live in a second thought. I can honestly say it never occurred to me how many different ethnic groups lived in this community until now. This class has made me re-evaluate this community that I am a part of and question the way the other members of it get along among themselves. It’s amazing what you get use to and really stop seeing because it gets to be repetitious or convenient to look the other way. In light of this very normal reaction to my surroundings for the final project in this class, it is my goal to share with you the community I live in without the blinders on.
Currently, I reside on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii in one of its small town called Waipahu which makes up only a little part of the island. Not being sure where to start my research for this project, it came to me that I need to start with the basic, so I took a stroll down the streets of my community. It came as a huge surprise that there were things happening that I knew nothing about on a daily bases. With the blinders off and sunshades on I walked, looked, listened and had interesting conversations with people of several minority groups and enjoyed each and every minute of it. What I found was amazing and very surprising where I thought only two or three different ethnic groups lived there were many more and I belonged to one of those ethnic groups. In additions to this new knowledge I learned that what I thought was my community, according to the people of this island, the Island of Oahu is considered one community with small sections in it. With this in mind I had to take a different look at community, and the people that live in it.
