Business Research Methods, Part I Starbucks

Develop a research question arising from an organizational dilemma. Make sure you define the problem.

Starbucks, Inc is a multibillion dollar company that is turning green to keep up with the global change. Starbucks has a goal that by the year 2015 to have their cups 100% recyclable (Starbucks, 2011). The problem for Starbucks is if investing in the green theory will would make a significant difference to its current or future clientele. Questions to be answered: Would it increase the Starbucks data base? Would the recyclable cups increase the image to the public to bring in new business? Would this give an edge over their competitor’s example Dunkin Donuts?

Determine: an appropriate research design.

Team A will has determined a research design would help answer the above questions. The first stage is exploratory, aimed at formulating hypotheses and developing the specific research design. The general research process contains three major stages: (1) exploration of the situation, (2) collection of data, and (3) analysis and interpretation of results(Cooper, & Schindler 2006).

To begin the research Team will be using an exploratory study. Exploratory studies tend toward loose structures with the objective of discovering future research tasks. It would also assist in developing hypotheses or questions for further research. The method of data collection will by a communication study to get customer feedback. To study the effects of research it would be experimental, to see if going green is an appropriate move. The purpose of the study would be casual to determine how one variable produces changes in another, example if going green would increase the number of customers and revenue. The time dimension would be longitudinal because the study will be able to track changes over time and measure the effects of the economy.
