Many people classify the Hispanic American as simply Mexicans, but in fact, there are many different types of Hispanics. We will be discussing Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Brazilian Americans, and Cuban Americans. All four groups speak Spanish, but each has their own twist to the language. Most all Hispanics belong to the Roman Catholic faith, but each also has an alternative. It is interesting to see the differences between each group. We will be discussing the linguistic, political, social, economic, religious, and family characteristics throughout each group.

Mexican Americans originally had no need to speak English until English become dominant in the United States. The Spanish spoken by Mexican Americans varies depending on their rural or urban identity, his or her economic standing, and their length in the United States. Most Mexican Americans speak an informal version of Spanish, Englekirk (2012). Many Mexican Americans are not involved in the political scene for many reasons. Some include their poor language skills, citizenship status, education in politics, and poverty. The majority of Mexican Americans view the man as the head of household and the one to rely on for income Englekirk (2012). Mexican Americans believe that the woman should stay home and care for the house and children. In social aspects, many take to the elders for advice because of their experienceEnglekirk (2012). Mexican Americans social status could also depend on their employment, poverty level, and status of the neighborhood they live in. Many Mexican Americans are Catholic, and some are of Petecostals. They value the prevention of illness as an accepted practice to their religion that involves prayer, wearing of religious medals and candles and even pray to shrines that have been built in their homes Englekirk (2012).
