History of Tugbungan, Zamboanga City

Tugbungan originated from two words: “Tubug” meaning to wallow and “NGAN” the sound the carabao makes. Joining these two words became the popular name now “TUGBUNGAN”.Long before, we can find many carabaos in the swampy areas and in vacant plaza of this place. Whole day, these carabaos spend the day in these places that sometimes the owners do not even bother to bring their carabaos in their homes at night.

Tugbungan long ago was one of the sleeping barangays for it was so peaceful and silent. There were only a few people residing in the place.Tugbungan is 4.5 kms away from the heart of the city with an area of 380.7098 hectares. There roads were not passable before and there was even no potable water connection at all. The means of transportation was by trail on foot. There was no school for children to go and all they did was travel to Barangay Tetuan.

The main source of Tugbungan River is Barangay Pasonanca, then passing through Tumaga, then portion of Guiwan, then Tetuan, all the way to Tugbungan being the last barangay before reaching the mouth of the seashore.Tugbungan also was once a picnic site for the neighboring Barangays like Talon-Talon and Mampang.
