Objective

 

The aim of this test is determining of shear resistance of soil. To characterize this speciality of soil, we’ll try to obtain treatment model of soil on shear resistance. So for characterising of this treatment of soil on natural circumstance, we’ll try to obtain shear stres-horizontal displacement curves and shear stres- normal stres diagram.

Theory of the test

 

If all points -in a soil mass- reach collapse limit, the soil will lost stability of itself and this soil mass will collapse by shearing the surface along which is formed by this point. So this situation can make big problems. Sometimes this problems can be uncompensatible. At least this problem will cause big expenses.

Cause of that we need characterizing this problem to analyse. To characterize this problem there are two kind test: triaxial tests and direct shear test. And we only used the direct shear test. This test is based on directly shearing of soil and measure changes. this test is divide under title by making types. They are consolidate-drained (CD), consolidate-undrained (CU) and unconsolidate-undrained (UU). The natural circumstance of the soil that we take the specimen was undrained and unconsolidated (UU). In an UU test, shear is started before the soil sample is consolidated under the applied normal load.

In this test, the sample is placed to shear box. And under a constant normal load, the shear force is used by increasing slowly. While the sample is sheared, axial loading, shear loading and displacement reading are made. At the end of test, shear stres-horizontal displacement curves and shear stres- normal stres diagram are plotted. And this graphs are commented on.
