I have chosen the argument that automobiles are comparable to the attacks of 9/11. The writer states that the attacks are more prone to a rage reaction especially if closer to home, and that Americans should instead consider the odds of being killed in an automobile accident is greater. This being the premise I believe that it is dependent to the conclusion because it is supported by the writer’s argument.
Because terrorist attacks are planned over time, and to cause fear to the victims by not knowing who is behind the attacks, I believe this argument to be deductively invalid. Car accidents are not controlled or planned unlike the attacks, thus leading me to the conclusion.
The second argument I have chosen is the way the writer compares the malice of the attackers and the murderers that commit 15,000 murders every year in the United States. These premises of the malice making 9/11 more noteworthy, and the malice of both parties being compared I believe makes this premise dependent also.
The second argument like the first I also believe is deductively invalid due to the fact that the writer is just assuming that there have been no other occurrences since the attacks of 9/11. I believe the writer is trying to make the argument stronger by adding the impacts of the attacks and the impotence of the matter according to the media, but I do not believe that this statement makes the argument valid.
I believe that both arguments compare the tragic events of 9/11 to other statistics of death in the United States. I also believe that the writer was intending on making a solid argument in this matter, but did not do so. I believe that the only conclusion we can come away with is that there are more deaths caused by other events than were caused by 9/11. However these are everyday events unlike the terrorist attacks leading me to my conclusion that this argument is invalid. I believe for this argument to have...
