Divorce Article Summary

An article that I discovered in the University Library that relates to issues in social development in adults is entitled “The Tasks and Tallies of Divorce.” This article is from the Economic education bulletin. The article discussed the many negative effects that divorce has on men and women. The article discussed in depth that various financial, physical, and emotional affect that can occur when filing and completing divorce.

The article gave several examples of different types of financial burdens that people filing for divorce will face. Extremely high lawyer fees, appraisals of business ownerships and having to sell one’s home, are just a few of the financial responsibilities related divorce. Couples also commonly have to split assets fifty-fifty so loss of personal possessions is also a major contributing factor’s when observing financial losses in divorce.

Many people who are divorce experience short term to long term health effects such as insomnia or chronic headaches due to stress and nervousness. Insomnia is the inability to sleep, which many people who file for divorce experience because they are the verge of losing their home and families due to custody agreements. People may also experience dramatic increase or decrease in their weight. Some people eat to relieve stress; others may not eat at all. It all depends on the individual.

One of the most noticeable effects of divorce in adults is the emotional impact that divorce has on people. Some people have been known to fall into deep depressions and experience long term mental health problems. Therapy and counseling is usually required in family courts in the United States due to the emotional trauma that is exhibited in families where divorce is present. The emotional trauma seen in parents is far worse when they lose their children due to custody agreements.
