The diagnostic category Persuasive Developmental Disorder or PDD was given to a category of disorders that focused primary with the delays that were observed in the development of multiple basic functions including socialization and communication of individuals. There are approximately seven pervasive developmental disorders which are Persuasive Developmental Disorder or PDD NOS which includes “atypical autism, and is the most common: Autism, the best-known; Asperger; Rett syndrome; and Children disintegrative disorder (CDD).” (1) Autism, Asperger syndrome, and Persuasive Developmental Disorder or PDD NOS are known as autism spectrum disorders. Rett syndrome and Children disintegrative disorder (CDD) are the two that are the rarest of all the disorders and are not always diagnosed within the autism spectrum. Some of the signs and symptoms that a child may have Persuasive Developmental Disorder or PDD NOS if the child has not been diagnosed by the age of 3 can include:

* “Unable to cuddle or be comforted

* trouble interacting, playing with, or relating to others

* avoiding eye contact; not looking at people

* not pointing to objects to call attention to them

* unusual movements, such as hand flapping, spinning, or tapping

* delays in developmental milestones or loss of milestones already achieved

* playing with the same toy in a way that seems odd or repetitive

* not using or understanding language

* not exploring surroundings with curiosity or interest” (2)
