The parks closing for three days a week would be the lead story. The story will affect the community more than the death of a celebrity. Not that the death of someone is not important, but it will be covered by many news outlets though. The celebrity death will also receive much attention on a national level. To avoid over kill it is a good idea to just acknowledge death and how it happened. Also to keep objectivity it would make sense to give attention to the issue that affects those in the community the most. The viewers will want to know why the parks are closing for three days a week, and they will want know if they can have a say in it or not. The viewers will also want to know if the money can come from somewhere else to keep them open. Depending on the time it takes to do all the investigating the celebrity death may win out until more information can be obtained. When considering the station’s access to online sources it changes the picture a little.

If there is online news for the station covering the death of the celebrity would make more sense as the online version of the news reaches more viewers than those who are affected by the parks closing. The online source will also cover the park closures as well. The online version also can be updated as needed to reflect new information regarding the closures. This will also allow the residents voice their opinions about the park closures. The residents can say exactly how this will affect them and whether they want the closures or not. In turn the station can go to the city council and let them know how the public feels. There is a social responsibility to find all aspects of both stories. Several options come to mind though as both stories could have different angles as well.

Of course there are many variables if the celebrity had a connection to the community it would make more sense to give it more attention. Bing Crosby had a very strong connection to the community where I live....
