Functions of Management

The four functions of management are utilized within every company. Management ensures stability of an organization. Managers are responsible for maintaining a high level of work ethic and lead by example. Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the four functions of management. Management positions require management to perform these functions in order to be effective in their positions.

Planning

The planning phase of management is key to the direction of a company. According to the management planning guide “Planning means looking ahead and chalking out future courses of action to be followed. It is a preparatory step. It is a systematic activity which determines when, how and who is going to perform a specific job. Planning is a detailed programmed regarding future course of action.” ("Planning Function", n.d.) Within my organization there is more to planning than meets the eye. As an enrollment advisor at the University of Phoenix I see the end result of the plan. Within enrollment at University of Phoenix I see a Main Director who oversees an entire division of enrollment. The mass plan is followed throughout enrollment at University of Phoenix with slight variations depending on clientele and need. A well devised plan to bring the students in is an ever evolving goal. As a division the goal is for each enrollment advisor is to assist at least 4 students per month to get into class. Creating the plan to take every counselor to the next level is ongoing and comes in the way of training, coaching and practice. The plan to get there or road map to get us there is what enables management to organize themselves accordingly.

Organizing
