OPEN COMMUNICATION

Open communication is a vital characteristic of a thriving work environment. When it is promoted, applied, and followed in the workplace, by leaders and workers, it facilitates problem-resolution, sets a friendly-trustworthy atmosphere, and raises productivity. A great tool to apply in the workplace in order to establish open communication is the Open Door Policy.

Communication Begins With Leaders

Communication skills begin with the leaders of a company, as they set the example for the entire group. Leaders are required to actively promote and practice open communication. Actions speak louder than words, therefore, the attitude, habits, and daily actions of leaders are reflective of the overall communication of a company. Leaders, as role models, set the standard of communication. A simple greeting goes a long way and small talk allows for an employee to get comfortable, especially when it comes to speaking to a higher authority figure and helps strengthen a relationship. That is the first step to communication, knowing and respecting co-workers on a personal and professional level. In order to get to know a co-worker, understand their work habits, and the way to work together, there needs to be communication.

Open Door Policy

The Open Door Policy can be used to encourage the development of an open communication. Adopting the Open Door Policy means that every manager’s door is open to every employee (Heathfield, 2010). When it comes to this policy, an employee has a responsibility to address any working concerns with a manager, whether it is a problem, complaint, suggestion, or an observation. However, before an employee approaches the Open Door Policy, the employee should try to resolve any problem with the immediate supervisor. This allows for most problems to be solved immediately by a supervisor rather than by management or Human Resources staff members.
