INTRODUCTORY SPEECH EXAMPLE
Object Selected: Basketball
I. Introduction
A. (Opening Statement) Did you know the game of basketball was created in 1891 at a Massachusetts YMCA training facility? According to kansasheritage.org, the game included only 13 rules and was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals. Today we see a sport that has certainly evolved and which now also has a ball of its own; the basketball. (Show ball)
B. (Thesis) At first glance you may not notice how similar I am to a basketball however you will soon understand the similarities.
C. (Preview of Main Points) Like the basketball, I am energetic – like the color orange; I have a worn yet tough covering and I am well-rounded.
II. Body
A.(1st Characteristic)The color orange is vibrant, even loud at times & symbolizes energy.
1. Seldom, if ever, will you see me sit still. I must always be moving, even in my desk
some part of me is moving.
a. When I leave campus, I either go to work or to the gym.
b. I work out in the gym three days a week; it’s not only for physical fitness but it’s also my mental fitness. Working out is my stress reliever.
c. I am also a member of a local men’s club basketball team. I love the teamwork, dedication, competition and pride which comes with being on a team.
2. I work at UPS and spend numerous hours loading and unloading boxes and packages from trucks. I really enjoy the guys I work with and we stay so busy, the time just flies by.
3. Even at home I don’t slow down. I always find some task to accomplish. I do however find time to sit for college football games!
B.(Second Characteristic) I have lived on my own since the age of 17, paying my bills and learning how to not only survive, but how to be successful. These challenges at such a young age have given me a worn and tough cover, like the basketball.
