Alternative fuel

In today world alternative fuel is the way our country’s is leaning towards for cleaner air quality. There are all different types of alternative fuels like clean diesel, butanol, ethanol, hydrogen, natural gas, and tropsch. There is a company name Argonne National Laboratory that is doing research on alternative fuel to improve air quality. According to their research they want to “Promote and stimulate alternative and renewable fuel, the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard has made it a requirement to increase the production of ethanol and advanced biofuels to 36 billion gallons by 2022.” (http://www.transportation.anl.gov, 2010). The three types of alternative fuel we are going to talk about is electric car, natural gas, and ethanol fuel vehicle.

Electric cars have some good thing and bad things about them. With electric vehicle they have no tailpipe emissions mean less population. They cost less to own and is it easy to maintain. Electric vehicle don’t need fluids to run so you don’t have to worry about all the fluid that you usually need to check. Some of the bad things that there are not that many charging station and charging time usually take 6-8 hours. When the electric vehicle breaks down there are not that many people out there that know how to work on them.

Natural gas vehicles help us reduce on our dependence on foreign oil. They cost significantly less than the per gallon cost of gasoline or diesel. It burn cleaner than fossil fuel and without releasing sulfur dioxide. But one disadvantage there are only about 800 natural gas station available nationwide, compared to the 175,000 stations dispensing gasoline.

Ethanol vehicle fuel comes from renewable fuel that are harvest and take about 6 months to grow. It’s mostly made from corn but can also be made from trees and grasses. Ethanol is inexpensive to produce and help our economy with jobs. The use of ethanol can reduce our dependence upon foreign oil and reduce...
