I. Description of Eastman Chemical Company’s (aka EMN) Strategic Business Units
a. Coatings, Adhesives, Polymers, and Inks (CASPI)
i. “Eastman’s CASPI products are used to formulate everything from household paints to automotive and marine coatings to specialty adhesives like those found in baby diapers, tapes, and nonwoven consumables, such as feminine hygiene products. This business serves a variety of diverse markets including building and construction, transportation, packaging, electronics, and personal care.” (Eastman Chemical Company, 2009)
ii. Major Product Offering
1. A major product offering is an adhesive product that is used between all layers of Proctor & Gamble’s Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers with Dry Max lines of diapers.
iii. Market Position
2. Market Position here is very good. Earnings from the CASPI SBU are expected to rise $51M to $350M in 2011. (Chemical Week, 2011)
b. Performance Chemicals and Intermediates (PCI)
iv. “Eastman’s PCI Segment produces a wide range of products used in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical coatings, nutrition, food and beverage ingredients, personal care and cosmetics, medical devices, toys, flooring, and many other applications.” (Eastman Chemical Company, 2009)
v. Major Product Offering
3. Non-Phthalate Plasticizers are a major part of the PCI product portfolio.
vi. Market Position
4. PCI is expected to contribute greater than $300M in 2011. (Chemical Week, 2011)
