Introduction

Providence Little Company of Mary is a 436 bed hospital in Torrance CA. It is a non-profit facility and sees approximately 17,000 patients per year. Its mission is to reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through compassionate service. Their vision is to answer the call of every person they serve: “Know me, care for me, and ease my way”. Little Company provides about twenty million dollars a year in charitable services and is committed to meeting the needs of the impoverished and local communities (www.lcmhs.org). Their primary streams of income are from insurance reimbursements consisting of health maintenance organizations, Medicare, preferred provider organizations and philanthropic contributions. Due to their location, they have low payer mix and the patient population is primarily comprised of low-middle income clients. Their largest demographic are low-income Hispanic patients.

SWOT Analysis

Little company is an organization with an abundance of skilled, competent staff who are creative, innovative and excellent at problem solving. There is effective interdisciplinary communication with nursing and other service lines. Nurse leaders in the organization promote professional practice and staff development. Overall, the employees incorporate the hospital’s vision into the care they provide and are dedicated to meeting the needs of the community. Weaknesses include unstable work environment due to regional and institution-wide change of leadership. Little Company has recently changed their entire executive leadership team to include a new CNO, COO and CEO. Nursing wages at Little Company are below competitive rates for Southern California. Consequently, they frequently experience high turnover and poor retention rates.
