The Cold War began at a time when America thought that they would be war free. A once peaceful alliance between The United States and The Soviet Union had turned backwards; this was the basis of the Cold War. The controversy of the Cold War began in 1945, but in actuality, the war did not actually start until 1947. It lasted over 40 years, ending in 1991. The Cold War was thought of by many as the longest running war in United States history. The basic fabric of the Cold War was caused because of the differences between the United States vs. the Soviet Union, communism, and anti-missile shields.

United States. vs. Soviet Union

The Cold War began right after World War II ended. The alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union fell apart over re-creating the world order, with a main focus on the future of Europe. These disagreements lasted for more than forty years.

The Soviet-Nazi pact of 1939 only made things worse between the U.S. and Soviet Union. It was only two years later when the two countries found themselves on the same side as they both came under attack from the Axis power of Germany and Japan. The United States gave the Soviet Union more than 11 billion in aid. This alliance was soon broken by fears from Americans, that the Soviet Union would make a separate settlement with Germany and by Soviet frustrations over delays in the American and British joint invasion of Europe from the west. This occurred in June 1944. This was the beginning of a war that lasted more than forty years.

Communism

Republicans noticed the lack of public support for foreign policy programs. This gave them a chance to make increases that would undermine public confidence in the Truman Administration and in the Administration's foreign policy record. The charge of being soft on communism had been an issue since the 1944 political election. It became effective when the war alliance with the Soviet Union began to go bad in early 1945.
