Motivation Assignment

The purpose of this group assignment is to practice OB research.

You will assess a basic job in terms of duties, tasks & responsibilities, and other job dimensions/ characteristics, for the purpose of applying Motivational Theories and incorporating these principles into a cogent analysis.

How can a manager devise motivational strategies by understanding the factors employees feel are important but are unsatisfied at the workplace?

Assignment:

Working in groups, interview a person currently employed in an entry-level capacity such as in a fast-food restaurant, an entry level clerical or administrative position, an entry level sales position; or a job of your choice meeting this specific criterion (check with the instructor before you start).

NB: a fellow group, class, or program member is not an acceptable candidate for this assignment.

The following are minimum requirements [you need to determine what else will add value to your assignment]

Step 1: Interview the employee [and record responses]

• Assure the person of strict confidentiality – neither their name nor answers will be given to their employer.

• Ask the person [and record all relevant comments]

 for their job title and then ask them to describe their main duties and responsibilities [record these].

 the general context in which they perform their job [environmental elements, type, size, products/services of the organization in which they work, with whom they work, to who they report, the purpose of their job, and other job elements they consider relevant to understanding their work [record these].

 to complete the attached “Needs Survey” – “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM YOUR JOB?”.

NB: (Do not show the researched responses to the questionnaire to the person you are interviewing.)
