In addition to my topic on sharks I will give you more information about the government’s action s about it.

“California’s Legislature sent Gov. Jerry Brown a bill seeking to ban the sale, trade or possession of shark’s fin, over the objections of two senators who called the measure racist, because the fins are used in a soup considered a delicacy in some Asian cultures”, Huff Post, Los Angeles newspaper said March 15, 2012.

The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Paul Fond, D- Cupertino, and was supported by Senator Carol Lui, D-Pasadena. He said that it’s necessary that sharks species be protected.

There was an estimate related to the discussion above that fishermen kill 73 million sharks each year for their fins.

The proposed ban has been supported by celebrities like actress Bo Derek and retired NBA center Yao Ming. The bill has been approved by state Senate of California.

“Shark finning is a cruel and senseless act”, Sea Shepherd, conservation society said. Some shark populations have been decreased by more than 90% in the last 30 years. According the post from that society sharks are finned while still alive.

In Ecuador exportation and trafficking the sharks is against the law.

Shark Finning is illegal in Ecuador according to the Ecuadorian Presidential Decree 2130, which was signed into Official Registry on October 7, 2004. Its articles said that “the export of shark fins is prohibited in Ecuador. Any attempt to export sharks fins will result to immediate confiscation and incineration. Also, any person or entity that attempts to falsity information in fish logs will be liable for prosecution including possible fines and removal of fishing license.”
