Museum of Fine Arts Houston

My experience to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston was absolutely amazing! I had visited this museum before in the past but it was a few years ago. Although I enjoyed my experiences in the past, this visit was like none of the others. This time I had more of an understanding of the art and that, in turn, allowed me to have a tremendous amount of appreciation for it. The way the museum has the art arranged seemed to tell a story of the art itself. It was as if the atmosphere gave the introduction and each piece of art; whether it is a painting, sculpture, photograph, furniture, jewelry or décor, were the details to the bigger picture. I loved how each period and/or place had a different scenery; each and every one allowed you to travel back in time for a moment and get a sense of what the artists was feeling or of what life was like during that particular time.

One of the pieces that appealed to me the most was “Landscape at Valmondois”, a 20th century oil on canvas painting created in 1912 by the French artist Maurice de Vlaminck. The dramatic brush stokes and intense colors of blue, green, and red-orange make the scene feel tense and serious as if a storm was coming; the use of geometrical composition added to this effect. The house is the focal point highlighted by light shining down though the dark clouds. This painting gave me an overall sense of somberness. Another work of art that really caught my attention is the “Giant Soft Fan, Ghost Version” that was created in 1967 by the American artist Claes Oldenburg in who was born in Sweden. It is a huge sculpture made of canvas, wood, and foam rubber. The size of this sculpture alone will catch anyone’s attention, but it is by no means your average sculpture, this piece is a soft and fluffy replica of a desk fan that is suspended from the ceiling while the electrical cord rests on the floor.
