Change.org: Advocacy Website Analysis

The website is chose to analyze is Change.org. This website takes a very systematic approach to bringing about change. One would even argue that they take a public policy approach. This website attempts to bring change about on a diversity of different issues.

Change.org is a petition website. It is not a specialized website. It ranges from a number of different petitions for different causes. Just to name a couple of the headliners, we have: “Prosecute the killer of our 17-year old son, Trayvon Martin”, “Repeal Florida’s reckless ‘shoot first’ law that shields Trayvon’s killer”, “MPAA: Don’t let the bullies win! Give ‘Bully’ a PG-13 instead of an R rating!”. What is so great about this website, is anyone can come on and begin their own petition for something they believe in. This website is a centralized location for all to come support each other exercising our first Amendment right; the right to petition. There is a ‘Start a Petition’ tab, ‘Browse Petitions’, ‘Victories’ tab and even a global map showing where people in the world are currently signing or forming their own petition. On a holistic aspect, the top causes tackled are: animals, criminal justice, economic justice, education, environment, gay rights, health, human rights, immigration, and women’s rights. This website starts petitions, mobilizes support, and wins change. Not only are people supporting and passing this petition, but I guarantee you that from coming on the website they are being exposed to other problems, which will spread education on different topics. This website is informing our public!
