Early Intervention for Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong neuro developmental disorder impacting a child’s learning ability. There is no cure and the cause is unknown.

The Autism Spectrum Umbrella consists of three main categories; Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Development Disorder. Rhett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder are other rare forms of ASD.

Autism is treatable with Early Intervention Strategies, but first an accurate diagnosis is essential. This is done through a process of observations conducted by a Paediatrician, Psychologist, and Psychiatrist. There are five essential assessment components for a diagnosis;

1. Paediatric Medical Assessment – determine any underlying medical condition.

2. Communication Assessment – involves pragmatic, expressive, receptive, verbal and non- verbal communication skills.

3. Psychosocial Assessment – determine developmental and family history.

4. Behavioural Observations – conducted in a range of settings to determine behaviour and response.

5. Cognitive Assessment – cognitive abilities are assessed to interpret behavioural responses.

Various symptoms are required from these categories for a diagnosis. Common developmental delays are shared with individuals in communication, social interaction, sensory processing, imaginative and creative play. Some also have repetitive behaviours.
