Life Law #7 – Life is managed

1. You are a life manager.

The purpose of this chapter is to try and drive home the point that we are in control of our lives, and that we are the most important people in our own lives. While that may seem selfish and self-centered, there are very good reasons behind this logic. In order to care for others and carry on a stable life that will allow you to give back, you must first take care of yourself because there are not many people out in the world that have you as their number one priority, and even if there were, in many situations they could probably not do anything for you. As a result, looking out for yourself is in the best interest of everyone around you that depend on you, and that you care about.

The perspective that Dr. Phil advocates for is one of the individual as his own life manager. What Dr. Phil is trying to get across by saying that each individual is his own life manager, is that the individual has to think of the life manager role as if it were external to them. That is to say, to think of the life manager role as if someone else were managing your life for the best, and what actions and views this person would see or recommend from this external field of vision. This point of view allows the individual to see themselves through an external view that in a way removes or at the very least diminishes personal biases and excuses that someone else looking in from out would not have the same biases or self-prejudices that we may have about ourselves.

A large portion of managing our own lives is also managing our expectations. A lot of the issues we have in everyday life in terms of our views of failure and success have to do with how we manage our expectations whenever we enter into a new course in life. Those who can set realistic expectations will not be let down as hard as those who set unrealistic expectations and inevitable fail to meet them, and as a consequence, suffer greatly from the disappointment....
