Chapter seven, “Seeking Fairness, “Matters of Justice,” focuses on ethical professionals behaving in a fair and just manner. Ethical Professionals always avoid unfair discrimination, give credit where credit is due, discriminate fairly, treat people equitably and balance gate keeping with advocacy. This chapter begins with a comment saying, “We should consider it our obligation-morally, ethically, and professionally-to be just and fair in all of our dealing.” This statement is very powerful and has a lot of meaning. If we all followed through with this statement, we could live in a more humble community.

A very important part of this chapter would be giving credit where credit is due. When you fail to acknowledge someone’s achievements, or try to pass them off as your own, you’re basically stealing an intangible good from that individual. Plagiarism is a very common form of theft, that I’m sure professors are a witness too very often. I believe that if people are just honest as a whole, they would avoid all these misleading and unethical behaviors. Someone who is honest won’t have the heart to take recognition where its not due. When discrimination is necessary ethical professionals must learn to discriminate fairly, otherwise it could be viewed as an abuse of power. Just like any other decision, you must first obtain all the possible information necessary, review information thoroughly and then compare the differences and make a decision based on one’s ability to do their job.

Another important element of ethics is treating people equitably not equally. Is it really fair to deny someone a service because they financially can’t pay? Ethical professionals take every individual’s personal means into account and try to provide the best service available. I personally believe the story of Casey in “Treating people Equitably, not Equally,” to be fair and just. I admire people of her kind. Fairness is a key virtue in becoming an ethical professional....
