Workshop on Disaster management (earthquakes)

Final Report

The 3days workshop on Disaster management (earthquake) was held from 22nd -24th December 2011 at Sardar Bahadur khan women’s University Quetta.The workshop was organized in connection with PELI 2011 Master Action plan Implementation phase. The objectives of the workshop were to create awareness amongst teachers and students regarding earthquakes and preparing them to handle an emergency arising in the wake of an earthquake. Rationale behind the Master action plan was the ignorance and unpreparedness of inhabitants of Quetta city to a looming danger in the form of an earthquake of 7.6 or more magnitude. Quetta city lies in an active seismic zone that has experienced in past and can experience anytime in future an earthquake of 7.6 to 8 magnitudes. A greater need was felt of educating people especially teachers and students at schools, colleges and universities of saving themselves and others in case of a disaster.

30 participants including teachers and students from different faculties of Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University participated in the 3day event

Day one comprised of introduction to the program, and objectives of the workshop followed by a photographic presentation on earthquake by Durdana Khosa. The participants were given a questionnaire as a pretest in order to assess their knowledge regarding different terminologies relating to earthquakes. Keeping in view the objectives of day one the participants were given a presentation by Prof Din Mohammad kakar (Assistant Professor Department of Geology University of Baluchistan) on
