Congratulations and Welcome
As Manager, one of the main responsibilities will be introducing new employees to their teammates. The purpose of this memo is to inform of how groups are formed, their roles and how they communicate. The following information should help you in your position:
* The five stages of group development
* Formation of group relationships
* The role of communication within a group
* Barriers that may arise
* Techniques to overcome those barriers
Stages of Group Development
Forming: In this stage, individuals within groups are dealing with uncertainty about his or her purpose, structure, and leadership. Members will test to see which behaviors will be either accepted or rejected. As they start to believe they are a part of the group, the forming stage is complete. (Judge, 2011)
Storming: Although members accept the existence of the group, they resist the constraints it puts on their individuality. They also deal with conflict on deciding the hierarchy of the group. Once leadership has been established, this stage is finished. (Judge, 2011)
Norming: By the end of this third stage, group members have formed a more closer relationship, the group has become cohesive and everyone is in agreement with behavior expectations. (Judge, 2011)
Performing: During this fourth stage the group members know each other well, are in full acceptance of the group structure, and are able to focus working on the task given. (Judge, 2011)
Adjourning: This is the final step and will only apply to temporary groups. In this step, the members will be focusing...
