Attention on employees’ mental health

Abstract

The conflicts between more profit and better treatment to employee are still existing and more and more serious since the industrial revolution. It is a dilemma for owners of companies to find a balance between them. This paper aims to propose that companies should take much more responsible on employee treatment than law regulated, especially on employees’ mental health, and support that sustainable employment is a valuable conception and a worth considering way to ease these conflicts.

This paper will begins from introduction of the circumstances of the employees in the firm, and indicate the relationship between employers and employees, and the disadvantages of employees. Than it analysis the law protection of the right of employees, but it is far from sufficient, and offering a case about the suicide in Foxconn Co.Ltd to prove the point above. In the end, it advocates the sustainable employment as a practical method to ease this conflict.

Previous study

The study of ethic issue between employees and business has never stop with the development of productivity since the industrial revolution. In the nineteenth century, the first wave of the industrial revolution, managers and scholars noticed the necessary of caring the working and living conditions of employees, but all of these are based on owners’ interest: only if workers live in halfway decent living circumstances are they likely to be productive and committed to the form’s economic success (Fitzgerald 1999).In the twentieth century, with the political divide, the attention of employee welfare was higher, but it is still limited in working condition or material range.
