A Place Of My Own

In the article "The Rewards of Living a Solitary Life," May Sarton states, "Solitude is the salt of personhood. It brings out the authentic flavor of experience"(9). Which means being alone and reflecting myself and the world around me can influence my personality in a nice way. When I have a firm sense of myself, I am stronger. In addition, that the salt of personhood can imply flavor or seasoning bringing a lot of excitement into my life, can help me appreciate life, and help me perceive its puzzling ways. Sarton believes that her living a solitary life for the past twenty years that being in solitude does not make one a hero or a crazy human being; instead, solitude can be potentially beneficial for those who choose it or for those who are forced upon. What makes me think that I am alone or not? I am in what I am. If I really need a good reason, to truly live a life of solitude, I'm not worried about some cultural idea and word called "solitude." So, the good reason is I'm free from the useless thinking of needing or not needing a relationship. I don't have to be in the company of others in order to be fulfilled and happy. When I am at work, I want to please the boss. When I'm at home I have to please my parents. When I get the time to get a little solitude, I want to take the time to please myself. I agree with Sarton that a period of solitude can actually have certain benefits and help me solve some of the problems in my life.
