During the summer of 2010 a local controversy became national as a 13 story mosque was planned to be built 2 blocks from the World Trade Center site. Without question many Americans would oppose of this idea due to the fact that Muslims landed an attack on the World Trade Center that killed thousands of people. But as the ibtimes states “our grief is no excuse for our racism and bigotry” Although this may be a circumstance where many Americans base their reason off of emotion, we must be rational and look at the intent of Muslims. As citizens we must be able to see how the Muslims are being the least bit of harmful by creating a place of worship and accept them.

There are many logical reasons as to why the mosque should be built near ground zero. Many people do not understand that the proposed site to build the mosque is private property where Muslims have their religious practices. The shutdown Burlington Coat Factory is already a place where Muslims go. Many protesters claim that the mosque is actually being built at ground zero when in fact it will be two blocks away. Another common misconception of many Americans is that this mosque will look like a religious structure. In fact this building will be an Islamic community center open to the public even containing a basketball court. This very fact proves the impact words. Even though in reality it is a community center, when people hear “Mosque” they automatically think it can be a detriment to American society because of the reputation of Muslims. The most essential reason for Muslims having a right to build this mosque is because it is legal. If they make this their own private property, by law they are allowed to do anything they want with it in the legal realms, and the first amendment give Muslims the freedom to practice their religion.
