1. How would you react in contrast to Jeanne if you were sent to an internment camp? Would you try and make the best out of it by joining activities and making new friends?

2. Do you think it was a good idea for Jeanne to visit Manzanar after her stay there? If so, do you think she should have brought her kids along?

3. Why do you think Jeanne’s father was so protective of his family?

4. How do you think Jeanne’s life would be different if she wouldn’t have been sent to an internment camp in her childhood?

5. How do you think Jeanne’s father reacted when he found out she was/is marrying a Caucasian.

Answers

1. If I were sent to an internment camp I feel I would never become accustomed to it as Jeanne did. I think this partly has to do with the time period in which I live now and my age now in contrast to her being so young. Also, I have always had the necessities of life and more, therefore it would be very hard for me to become comfortable to the Spartan way. Throughout my stay in the camp I would probably feel sorry for myself the entire time, making my stay even worse. I don’t think Jeanne ever really felt sorry for herself as I would. Jeanne also became involved in many activities. I think I would have a hard time getting started in the activities, probably having to be forced by my parents, but I would come to love them and enjoy doing them everyday.

2. I do think it was wise for Jeanne to once again visit Manzanar. I think this because Manzanar claimed much of her childhood, and through her visit it brought back painful but good memories to her. She also comes to understand her memories better as she strolls through the barren streets of what was once her life. I think her visit was a way in reclaiming what her and her family lost, and gained, in their time spent there.
