Task 2 - External sources of information. Most external sources of information are available via the internet. Therefore skills in searching and making sense of the internet are vital. The list of useful websites in the Overview to this learning guide is a start, but you should be able to demonstrate that you can use a search engine to find OHS information. You should also be able write a search query using tools such as “x”, (x), {X}, + and -, *,? AND, OR, NOT to make your query more efficient. (For information on how to write a search query using these tools go to the help section of your selected search engine; e.g.: http://www.google.com.au/help).

1.Identify an OHS problem or hazard in your workplace

2.Select an internet search engine (such as http://google.com/; http://yahoo.com/; http://www.ask.com/)

3.Demonstrate that you can use the search engine and query tools to locate relevant information for your selected problem including:

o legislation; o standards; o information from your OHS regulator; and o international sources of information.

(Depending on the problem selected, you may not find relevant information under each category but you should note the query you used and the nature of the responses you received in your search.)

Manual handling

Query used: "manual handling Western Australia"

Google search settings are currently on: "Australia" so that Google finds more relevant information based on my location.

Legislation query used: “WA manual handling legislation"

Results: First four results were from Commerce website followed by WebLaw - Occupational Health & Safety Law which URL contains edu.au.... Within this website it provides OHS laws for all states and territories within Australia where under WA it provides both Occupational Health and Safety Act 1984 (WA) and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 1996 (WA). The website also provided Commonwealth legislation.
