A. The importance of water resources and water management for the Singapore:

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands. Singapore is highly urbanised but almost half of the country is covered by greenery. More land is being created for development through land reclamation.

Total population of the country is 5 183 700 and the ensity is 7 315/ km2.

Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons, uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. As Wikipedia says the geographically small island nation of Singapore has few rivers of significant length or width, the longest of which, the Kallang River is only 10 km in length. The Singapore River, arguably the most famous in the country, is of insignificant length as well. 

Speaking about the water consumption, it is estimated that every Singaporean uses 250 liters of water a day; that is more than 1 billion liters a day for the entire population. The consumption rate is expected to grow at the rate of 3% a year with her rapid growth in population, industries and other economic activities. By the year 2020, the total consumption is expected to double that of the present consumption.

It is necessary to admit that in such a small area live great amount of people. It is one of the reasons for high density and high water consumption. In order to satisfy people’s needs, Singapore is depended on the water supply, so it is very important for Singapore to have its own water resources and to manage them efficiently.
