Buried: Abstract

Throughout his writing career, Edgar Allan Poe stayed true to his unique style of writing. In a number of Poe’s stories, he used a main character to narrate the story in a first person point of view. The narrator was usually unreliable in some way and gave a sense of mystery to the stories, making people wonder if the events were truly happening. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” and many of his other works, Poe uses a theme of being buried alive. At the time, 1846, being buried alive was a big concern to many people. Poe used this concern to his advantage, writing several stories where characters are buried alive. Poe knew what to write about to gain the public’s interest. To add some comic relief, Poe often uses irony. Considered as one of Poe’s greatest and most famous stories, “The Cask of Amontillado” is typical of Edgar Allan Poe’s writing because it uses his usual theme, style and use of irony to tell this story of revenge.
