Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

The chapter presents the purpose and the background of the study, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, and objective, statement of the problem, scope and limitation and definition of terms.

Background and Purpose of the Study

Mathematics is very useful in the daily life; everywhere we go we cannot deny the fact that we are using mathematics in all aspect. It is the basic unit in all levels of learning. Some people really hate this subject but them still trying to study it because we need it.

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space and change. Mathematics is used throughout the world as essential tools in many fields including natural science, engineering, medicine and social sciences. A traditional division of mathematics is into, pure mathematics in which studied for its intrinsic interest and the other one is the applied mathematics which can be directly applied to real world, it is concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspire and make use of new mathematical discoveries.1

Applied mathematics has different division like probability and statistic, computational sciences and other mathematical sciences.

Computational sciences include numerical analysis and computer algebra while other mathematical sciences includes operation research also known as operational research and mathematical programming.¹

There are different mathematical techniques used to make some development and innovation and as stated in the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines Article XIV Section 10:

“Science and Technology are essential for national development, invention and their utilization and to science and technology, education, training and services it shall support in indigenous, appropriate and self reliant scientific and technological capabilities and their application to the country’s productive system and national life.”²
