Operational Approaches
Approaches to operational management in both the service and manufacturing industries have several similarities and differences as well as advantages and disadvantages that affect how each industry operates. An analysis of these similarities and difference is required so that one can see the true advantages and disadvantages these industries bring to the table when conducting business. It is necessary to have a certain level of operational management within the service and manufacturing industry for it helps in increasing productivity and efficiency within the organizations.
Consumer Relations
Consumer relations, located within the services industry, is a service that is used primarily for interaction between the customer and the organization and also deals in the areas of day-to-day office procedures which include sales, marketing and of course, service. Every contact with the consumer is added to a spread sheet or history of that customer so that it can be used at a later date. This allows employees to access data about the customer so that they are familiar with them, the customer, so that campaigns, marketing, and sales can be tracked.
Enterprise Service Management
Enterprise service management, better known as ESM, is the comprehensive approach to managing after-sales services and enables many companies to turn their service organizations into profit centers (Wright, 2002). The idea behind this type of operational management is that it has the capability of aligning the entire organizational goals into that of business goals with the implementation of innovative rules of customer service for the industry so as to provide a better solution to problems that may arise.
