If you were given the chance to be the leader and have the control of a group would you take it? In the short story Hunters in the Snow, this chance comes to the character Frank after his ‘friend’ Kenny gets shot by the group scapegoat, Tub. Not only does Frank take control of the easily influenced Tub, but he takes light of the Kenny’s deathly situation by stopping to warm and up eat twice which leads one to believe that Frank is responsible of what is assumed to be Kenny’s death. Through the short story, it is interesting to witness how Frank morphs from a follower and jumps at the chance to take charge of the group. Frank also admits to something tearing at his emotions later on to Tub although Kenny had been holding it over his head earlier in the story. He is having an affair on his wife with his children’s fifteen year old baby sitter.

In the text, Franks appearance is describe as hairy knuckles processing a “heavy wedding ring” and a pinky ring “with a flat face and an ‘F’ in what looked like diamonds (88).” This direct example accompanies all the indirect examples of Frank’s egocentricity throughout the text. His wedding ring being described as heavy allows the reader to have an insight on how he feels about his marriage. Frank feels as if his marriage with his wife is holding him back from his love affair with a fifteen year old babysitter. Even this aspect of Frank’s life style lets the reader know that he is an unfaithful person who goes with impulsive feelings. Frank has all his hippie phrases that he uses to belittle both Kenny and Tub. Kenny soon makes his leader role present when Frank chastises for his “hippie bullshit” (87). When Kenny leaves the group to go into the farm house to ask permission to hunt, Frank capitalizes on the chance to shift the sides from Kenny and Frank versus Tub to Tub and Frank versus Kenny by sharing a small piece of his personal story with the naïve and unknowing...
