Introduction

As a team we observed the culture of two similar retail businesses. We selected Walgreens and Rite Aid for our organizational culture analysis project. As a team we observed the culture of each organization spending about 40 minutes at each place. In that time, we evaluated the atmosphere, espoused values, what we felt like the basic assumptions are, the employee experience, and the customer’s experience. Within this report, we will discuss how the two retail businesses are similar and also what ways they are different, in addition to giving a full description of each organization.

Walgreens

Observable Artifacts

While studying Walgreens some of the first observable artifacts that we noticed about the store were the outside parking lot. The location of this particular Walgreens was on the corner of Spring Garden and Ayock. The parking lot was very clean and spacious. As we entered the store we came to conclude that the store was very organized and clean, the shelves were stocked, and the employees were properly dressed in uniform. The store was arranged from cosmetics on the far right as soon as you walk into the store to the grocery aisle on the far left of the store. In the middle of the store were household items, personal care items and the children’s toy section. In the back of the store was the pharmacy area where they had lots of information available to customers. As we continued to look around, we noticed that the employees participated in an award system, the employee of the month was plastered on the wall. As employees spoke on the intercom they greeted the customers by saying “good afternoon,” which grasped our attention to hearing what they had to say.
