The City of Philadelphia has a huge variety of districts, which vary in size, quality, and purpose. The Old City District in Philadelphia is one of the more unique districts in Philadelphia, and has many distinct features that make it stand out as one of the better areas in the city. The Old City District stretches from the Delaware River to the 6th street, from Vine street in the north to Walnut Street in the south, and has many unique shops, stores, restaurants, bars and nightclubs within its boundaries. It is also home to the Independence National Park , of which Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are part of, and the National Constitution Center. The huge variety of places of residence, employment, and recreation, blend of older and newer buildings, and the constant stream of people visiting it makes it one of the most popular and successful areas in the city.

It is important for districts to have defined primary uses, or main reasons people come to the area, and there are a great variety inside the Old City District. The District itself has several primary uses, the most primary being Residences for several thousand people, workplaces for several thousand more, and tourist destination and recreational hotspot for many, many more. As residential location, it provides a home for many people who wish to live close to the main business district of Center City, but is slightly less expensive. Row houses and apartments are common here, and several condominium buildings are located within the district. As a business area, aside from the many shops and eateries that the area is known for, there are several banks, schools, the Fox television station, and the government's gargantuan U.S. Mint building located inside the boundaries of the district.
